JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Like almost all the participants, Martin Bailey bought raffle tickets so he could support Niswonger Children’s Hospital – but he didn’t really expect to win anything. The pharmacist from the small community of Parrottsville got a lot more than he bargained for, though. Bailey was the grand prize winner of the Mountain States Foundation’s Spirit Gala Raffle, which landed him a 2018 Chevy Traverse donated by Champion Chevrolet Cadillac. This was the 11th year the dealership has donated the grand prize. “I wanted to support the hospital and I thought, ‘What’s the best way? Buy a raffle ticket,’ ” Bailey said. So he bought two tickets at $50 apiece shortly before Christmas. Then, like all past winners, he didn’t know whether to believe it when he received the news he’d won. It came in the form of a phone call on Jan. 27 when the raffle drawing was held during the…

A message from our VP of HR: Here’s what we’re working on in human resources

Our Ballad Health merger has taken place and we’re moving forward as one system – but the transition is far from complete. There’s still a lot of work going on behind the scenes to fully bring us together, including in human resources. We’ve got an HR integration team in place giving careful consideration to an array of things, from pay scales and benefit packages to PTO and service recognition. It’s a complicated process but the team is working hard on putting it all together for us, and as decisions are made, we’ll communicate them to our team members. Look for many of these things to take effect on July 1, 2018, the start of the new fiscal year. We recognize it’s a time of uncertainty for everyone, so we’ll be as transparent as possible during this process and make sure Ballad Health team members are kept up-to-date as details are finalized. Here’s a list of…

Important note regarding our Ballad Health insurance and in-network providers

As Ballad Health, we’ve officially merged from two health systems into one. But there are still aspects of our merger that will take a while to implement, including our health insurance plans. It’s important to note that, until July 1, 2018, our in-network health insurance provider list has not changed yet. Providers who were out-of-network for you before the merger remain out-of-network for now. In this regard, we’re still operating on two different benefits systems for the next few months. Former Wellmont team members don’t yet have in-network access to Mountain States providers and vice versa. Creating a comprehensive benefits and health insurance package is one of the biggest things we’re working on, and after July 1, 2018, we should have a plan that gives all benefit-eligible Ballad Health team members in-network coverage at all Ballad Health facilities. We’ll have more information for you as details are finalized. In the meantime, if you’ve got questions, please…

NOTE: This nomination period is open for ALL Ballad Health team members through March 15. For legacy Mountain States and Laughlin Memorial team members who have already submitted nominations, there’s no need to resubmit. Your previous nominations are still good. This reopening of the nomination period is designed to ensure that ALL Ballad Health team members have…

The 2018 Niswonger Children’s Hospital Radiothon set for Feb. 26-27

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Patients just like 11-year-old Patiance Gardner depend on the Niswonger Children’s Hospital Radiothon. Patiance has an immune deficiency that plagues her with fatigue, narcolepsy, a heart murmur and susceptibility to all childhood diseases even though she’s been vaccinated and revaccinated for all of them. Every three weeks, Patiance visits Niswonger Children’s Hospital for medical tests, doctor visits and to have an IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) infusion of antibodies that her body doesn’t make. She’ll need these infusions for the rest of her life. “When we went to Niswonger Children’s Hospital for her first infusion, a child life specialist helped her start a mock IV on a stuffed bear,” said Gwendolyn Gardner, Patiance’s mother. “After that, she wasn’t scared anymore. Now, she loves to go and says the staff is like her family. Niswonger Children’s Hospital has been a blessing. I don’t know what we would do without them.” The radiothon is Niswonger Children’s…
