B Excellent Tuesday Tip: Owning your actions

B Excellent

NOTE: This email was sent to Ballad Health team members on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Dear Colleague,

This week, we’re launching our new B Excellent program, The Impact of You: How We Show Up Shapes What We Build Together. Over the next three months, we’ll explore how the choices we make and the way we interact with others can influence our teams, our patients, and the experience we create together. Each month will focus on a different skill: B Invested in October, B Thankful in November and B Giving in December.

We’ve attached a program guide for The Impact of You to this email. The guide includes a link to each tip, a Try This challenge for every tip, the program join code, and technical support contact information. Keep it handy throughout the three-month program as a companion resource to the Tuesday Tip emails, providing additional challenges, resources and support as you work through the tips and put them into practice.

We’ll begin the program this week with B Invested, which focuses on taking ownership of our actions, our role and our mindset. It’s about recognizing the part we play in the experiences we create and taking responsibility for the things within our control.

This Week’s Tip

Owning the Experience Tip #3: Owning Your Actions

We don’t always have control over what happens around us. In healthcare, circumstances can change quickly, priorities can shift, and we can encounter situations we never expected. What we do have control over is our mindset and how we react and respond.

Owning our actions means taking responsibility for both the positive and negative outcomes that come from our choices and behaviors. That kind of self-awareness demonstrates strength of character and a willingness to grow. When we recognize the impact of our actions, we have a better opportunity to learn from them and make different choices when needed.

And our actions don’t affect only us. The way we respond to a situation can influence the people around us, including our patients, their families and our coworkers. Choosing the next right thing, modeling the behaviors we value, and owning both the good and the bad can help create better experiences for everyone.

Call to Action:

Identify one behavior you model that you’re most proud of. This week, look for opportunities to model that behavior and pay attention to how others respond. Capture what you notice and consider what it tells you about the impact your actions can have.

As we begin this new program, think about the title: The Impact of You. The way we respond to a patient, interact with a coworker, handle difficult moments or approach our responsibilities can have an impact that reaches beyond us. Sometimes the best way to influence the experience around us is to start with the part we can control: our own actions.

Team Member Perspective

Candace Richardson, RN, from Woodridge Hospital, shared her perspective on why taking ownership of our actions matters. Her comment connects ownership to integrity, personal growth and our willingness to make changes when they’re needed.

We encourage all team members to continue leaving comments on the Practicing Excellence platform. Your personal stories and examples help turn these lessons into practical ideas that others across Ballad Health can apply every day. This is also a great opportunity to learn from one another, gain new perspectives and discover meaningful ways to integrate B Excellent into our daily work. By sharing successes, challenges and experiences, we strengthen our collective commitment to living these principles every day.
