NOTE: This message was emailed to Ballad Health team members on Tuesday, Nov. 3:
Dear Colleague,

November is a fitting time to begin the B Thankful skill in the ‘Impact of You’ program. Gratitude can be easy to think of as a simple “thank you,” but its impact can go much further.
Taking time to recognize the people around us and acknowledge the difference they make can strengthen relationships, create a more positive environment and help build a culture where team members know their contributions are valued.
This week’s tip
Gratitude in a Corporate Environment Tip #1: Impact of Gratitude on Team Culture
Gratitude has the power to change how we experience our work and how others experience working alongside us. When people know their efforts are seen and appreciated, it creates a sense of connection and reminds them that what they contribute matters. Over time, those moments of recognition can help create a more positive atmosphere, strengthen relationships and build a team where people are motivated to contribute their best.
And showing gratitude does not have to be a grand gesture. A heart-felt “thank you,” acknowledging someone’s extra effort or taking a moment to let a teammate know how they made your day easier can all make a difference. Small expressions of appreciation can help people feel seen and remind us that the work we do is connected to the people doing it alongside us.
Call to Action:
Think about the three areas of impact from this week’s tip and commit to one expression of gratitude this week that can contribute to your team’s culture.
As we begin the B Thankful skill, consider what gratitude can look like in your own workday. Notice the people making a difference around you, and don’t let the opportunity to recognize them pass by. A little gratitude can have an impact well beyond the moment in which it’s given.

New episode of the B Excellent Podcast
In the latest episode of the B Excellent Podcast, Josh and Aaron travel to Hancock County Hospital to talk with Phyllis Dossett, clinical director, and Sarah Trent-Pressley, director of patient care services.
They discuss the important role community hospitals play in caring for rural communities and the services Hancock County Hospital provides close to home. They also share how being part of the Ballad Health system helps create a broader network of care: Patients who can be treated at Hancock County Hospital receive care there, while those who need a higher level of care can be quickly triaged and transferred to the Ballad Health facility best equipped to meet their needs. It’s a great example of how a rural hospital can provide local, community-centered care while connecting patients to the resources of a larger health system when needed.

Team Member Perspective
This week’s perspective comes from Shaylea Snyder, CNA-T at Johnson City Medical Center, who shared:
“When teammates feel valued, morale improves, and job satisfaction raises. Conflicts are resolved more constructively. Gratitude fosters stronger relationships. One way that I enjoy expressing gratitude is by Acts of Service. I enjoy going the extra step when it means I get to make someone’s day.”
Shaylea’s perspective gets to the heart of B Thankful – in addition to being something we feel, gratitude is something we can choose to demonstrate. Her example of going the extra step with Acts of Service shows how appreciation can become part of the way we interact with and support one another. When people know their efforts are noticed and valued, those individual moments contribute to stronger relationships and a more positive team culture.

We encourage all team members to continue leaving comments on the Practicing Excellence platform. Your personal stories and examples help turn these lessons into practical ideas that others across Ballad Health can apply every day. By sharing successes, challenges and experiences, we can learn from one another and strengthen our commitment to putting B Excellent principles into practice.
