Over the holidays, we’re featuring our 2023 Scott and Nikki Niswonger Servant’s Heart Award winners in Ballad Health News, as well as on Ballad Health social media. The award honors team members, physicians and volunteers who display the heart of a servant by going above and beyond the normal call of duty in helping others at work and in the community, as nominated by their peers.

Among the wonderful team at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Regina Barkley stands out – for all the right reasons. As emergency department manager, she is a leader who willingly steps into the trenches, a colleague who readily extends a helping hand and a friend whose care for her team is unmistakable.

Regina is known for her willingness to take on anything to ensure patients receive the care they need. She has built a reputation for doing whatever it takes to support her team and maintain the hospital’s high standards of patient care. And when extra hands are needed, she readily picks up additional shifts.

Working around the clock is not unusual for Regina. Her extraordinary hours serve as a testament to her unwavering commitment. Yet, it is not just her dedication to her work that makes Regina exceptional; it is also her kindness and care. She works tirelessly to ensure the people on her team feel valued and cared for each day.

Regina’s compassionate spirit reaches outside the hospital’s walls. She actively serves the Elizabethton community through her church. Consistently present, she offers a helping hand, support and assistance wherever it is needed. She applies that same approach to her nursing career, so her work, leadership and community service all reflect her huge heart and willingness to help others.

Regina Barkley is more than just a manager; she embodies the roles of a nurse, a leader, a confidante, a community servant and a lifeline to her team and patients. Her deep commitment to her work, her team and her community is not only admirable, but also inspiring. She serves as a testament to the power of dedication, compassion and selflessness in the healthcare.

Regina’s tireless work ethic, unselfish care and dedication to the community make her an undeniable Healthcare Hero. In a field known to be intense, Regina Barkley not only confronts every challenge head-on but also does so with a smile, kindness and an unwavering commitment that leaves a lasting impression.

More about the Servant’s Heart Award

The award was named in honor of Scott and Nikki Niswonger. Scott is a Greeneville businessman and philanthropist who is the chief benefactor of the Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City, and a member of the Ballad Health board of directors. The Niswongers have a long history of serving others throughout the region, with a strong focus on education highlighted by the creation of The Niswonger Foundation.
