Ballad Health has had another leader recognized nationally by Becker’s Hospital Review. Lisa Carter, president of Ballad Health’s Southern Region, has been named among Becker’s “177+ women hospital presidents and CEOs to know” for 2023.

Carter, who joined the system in 2001 at Niswonger Children’s Hospital, began her career in nursing and has served in various leadership positions during her time with Ballad Health, including as vice president and chief nursing officer at Niswonger Children’s and Johnson City Medical Center, and as CEO of Niswonger Children’s Hospital.

As Southern Region president, she oversees operations at Johnson City Medical Center, Niswonger Children’s Hospital, Woodridge Hospital, Franklin Woods Community Hospital, Unicoi County Hospital, Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Johnson County Community Hospital and Greeneville Community Hospital. Carter has also been instrumental in creating and developing the Ballad Health Niswonger Children’s Network and was the network’s first CEO.

Becker’s wrote about Carter: “Under her leadership, the southern region has experienced significant growth, including expanding services and facilities, allowing the organization to serve the region’s population better. Her team has proactively developed innovative programs to enhance patient experience and outcomes. For instance, in response to the opioid epidemic in the region, Ms. Carter spearheaded the formation of a task force to address the crisis that focuses on harm reduction, prevention and treatment.”
