Buchanan County, Virginia, was hit by devastating flooding on the night of July 12 that damaged more than 150 homes and left many people homeless or without water or electricity. Some of the county’s roads are blocked with trees, debris and even uprooted houses, and power lines are snapped. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency.

Ballad Health is holding a donation drive for team members to assist those impacted by the flooding. We will have donation barrels available at each of our 21 hospitals, either in human resources or administrative offices, for team members to drop off items — with a focus on things that help residents who have no electricity, water or sewer for the next few weeks, and will be cleaning out mud from their residences.

Ballad Health will also donate several pallets of cleaning and hygiene products for residents in Buchanan County.

NOTE: We are also holding a public donation drive in our Virginia hospitals. The public can drop off donated items to donation barrels at our Virginia hospitals’ main entrances at the registration desk.

Items needed include:

  • Cleaning supplies such as bleach, disinfectants, paper towels, rubber gloves, rubber boots, heavy-duty trash bags, buckets, mops and shovels
  • Propane tanks for gas grills, generators, gas cans, funnels
  • Hygiene items
  • Water or sports drinks
  • Nonperishable food like energy bars

No clothing donations are requested at this point.

People can also make monetary donations via the United Way of Southwest Virginia.
