2. What’s your role within Ballad Health?

Vice president for patient care services/chief of nursing services at Bristol Regional Medical Center

 

3. Where are you from?

Smyth County, Virginia. We live in Wytheville. My wife is a chief nursing officer with Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol, so we actually live in Bristol, Tennessee, during the week.

 

4. Education and professional background:

Associate degree in nursing from Virginia Highlands Community College; bachelor’s degree in nursing old Dominion University; MS in education at Virginia Tech.

 

5. Tell us about your family:

Wife Valerie is an RN and CNO; we have a son, Seth, a daughter, Maggie, and a stepson, Travis; also three grandchildren, Brionna (9), Maria (6) and Tristan (4).

 

7. What’s your favorite food?

Anything on the grill, especially steak and seafood.

 

8. What’s your favorite movie or TV show?

“Big Bang Theory” and college basketball and football, in particular the Florida Gators!

 

9. What’s your favorite book?

Favorite authors are Jean Auel, Clayton Jennings, Steven Furtick

 

10. What do you usually do on the weekend?

Family time, family trips, church, grandkid time, and just relax.

 

11. What’s one thing most people at work might not know about you?

I love to sing in church. I sing solos and lead the music in church.

 

12. What inspires you to work in healthcare?

I love being a nurse. I’m a very visible, involved leader, which is well-respected by front-line staff. Even as a CNO I take time to interact with patients and still use nursing skills.

 

13. What’s the most moving moment you’ve ever witnessed while working in healthcare?

Oh my, there are many very moving events – the selflessness of staff when patient and families are struggling, such as seeing staff take up money or give clothes off their back to a patient or family.
