Acts of Caring: Mountain View nurses help a grandmother listen to an important ballgame

Acts of Caring

Dorothy, 91, is a resident at Mountain View Regional Hospital’s long-term care unit in Norton, Virginia, and her nurses went above and beyond to do something special for her. Even though it was a small thing, it meant a whole lot to Dorothy.

Her nephew coaches the girls’ basketball team at Central High School in Wise, Virginia, with the team winning five of the last six state titles, including three in a row. Dorothy keeps up with the games as best she can, and to show her support, she wore her Central Warriors shirt every day for two weeks, as long as the team was winning through the district, regional and state tournaments.

On the eve of the state finals, being held in Richmond, she wanted to arrange to hear or watch the game live, but was disappointed to find out it wasn’t going to be broadcast on TV, and radio reception was not good enough to listen that way. The nurses – who had produced two different radios in an effort to get good reception – came up with the idea to find the radio broadcast on one of their smart phones. Success!

They found the game, hooked up the phone and charger and set up Dorothy with a spot to listen in the dining room. She was so happy to be able to hear the game, and the Warriors won the state championship. Only later did Dorothy learn that her grandson was one of the game’s announcers. So she was fortunate to hear her nephew coach the team to a championship, while her grandson announced it – all thanks to the extra effort of the nurses!

Dorothy’s son wrote a thank-you note for the care and kindness by the nurses, saying: “This kind of dedication to patients is over and above the calling of the nurses. Or is it? I see the love, compassion, and dedication these nurses show for the residents at Mountain View every time I go for a visit, and it’s not all medical, they care about their patients. I know they have it rough some times and must work long shifts, but that does not diminish the quality of work they perform. I thank them all the time. My mother is doing much better now than she had been doing in the past few years while living at home. Thank you to the nurses, doctors and staff of Mountain View Regional Hospital for your outstanding service.”
